What is LiFi?

LiFi is a cutting-edge technology that transforms light into data through the modulation of an LED-emitted light signal, invisible to the naked eye.

The signal flows between a transmitter device (Access Point or Repeater Antenna) with LED bulbs and a receiver (Dongle) connected to devices. Although an external receiver is still necessary for most devices, PhotonFi offers the first tablet casing with an integrated LiFi receiver.

Thanks to ongoing miniaturization efforts, LiFi technology is on track to be seamlessly integrated into all devices (computers, smartphones, tablets, etc.) in the near future. With its attributes of ultra-fast, healthy, stable, and secure connectivity, LiFi is emerging as a flagship technology in the realm of telecommunications.

How does it work?

Our LiFiMAX Access Point manages, converts, and encrypts the network signal from modems, servers, and hotspots into beams of infrared light that are picked up by the LiFi transceivers and converted back into data that the device can use. The LiFi system also allows VLAN management from the user’s LAN to be passed through to ensure additional device-specific preferences.

The Access Point refers to a LiFi router linked to the Internet via a PoE-enabled RJ45 Ethernet cable, seamlessly integrated into an the antennas. The Access Point receives network information as an electrical signal, which is then translated through the modulation of the LED within the antennas. Emitting a light beam with an intensity that fluctuates tens of thousands of times per second, this oscillation is so rapid that it remains imperceptible to the naked eye. The LED emits a light beam whose intensity varies tens of thousands of times per second, so fast that this oscillation is perfectly invisible to the naked eye.


LiFi signal reception and processing

The device linked to the dongle or equipped with the integrated LiFi chip, when situated within the light beam’s coverage area, captures data transmitted through light oscillation. The Dongle facilitates the reception and processing of data through its inclusion of a photodiode that captures the light signal. A processor within the Dongle then translates this signal into a binary system, making it comprehensible to computers, smartphones, or tablets.
